WHATS UP WITH WEBSTER

SYLVAN LAKE, AB – The newest driver to the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series is probably one of the biggest motorheads you will find in Western Canada.  Ken Webster made his NPP Late Model Series debut in July and finished a respectable 11th in the Feature.  “I stayed out of trouble,” exclaims the Sylvan Lake, Alberta driver, “I just wanted to go out there and play with the boys.  One thing I don’t want to do is interfere with drivers running for a championship.  This year is my learning year in the NPP Series.”

Although he won the Legend Series Championship on the paved oval at Calgary, Alberta’s Race City Speedway back in 2005, Webster admits that his racing focus has been on the drag strip for more than a decade.  “Until the last race [in Edmonton], I hadn’t been on a dirt track in about 15 years.”  Webster owns a total of 27 race cars which includes 7 dragsters and 5 funny cars.  His massive ‘fleet’ of race cars are not just for his enjoyment.  “My two sons [Jesse and Kenny] race Top Dragster and Legend Cars.  My daughter [Shaylene] runs a Jr. Dragster and a Funny Car.”  Ken and his son Jesse were recent participants at the Hot August Night drag race event in Edmonton.  “My son Jesse was behind the wheel of his Top Dragster and I got to have some fun with my Wheelstander.”

Webster had a personal goal for his Edmonton appearance when he ran his exhibition Wheelstander called StuckUp.  “I wanted to hit 150mph at the finish line on the back wheels,” says Webster, “I came close but will have to try again next time.”  Webster’s best speed on the drag strip was just over 134mph(214kph) on his back wheels.  Although he wanted to go faster, Websters pass was good enough to set a brand new Castrol Raceway Wheelstander track record.

Webster owns KEW Services in Sylvan Lake which is heavily involved in Alberta’s booming oil and natural gas industry.  “I’m more busy during the winter months which gives me some time to play [with my toys] in the summer.  And when I say play, I mean go racing.”  Webster will play a few more times on the dragstrip and oval before winter arrives.  Next oval event for Webster will be at Central Alberta Raceways in Rimbey in September.
