TUCSON TRIALS FOR TEAM NPP

TUCSON, AZ – The 2018 race season is officially underway for Team Northern Provincial Pipelines Ltd.  Three consecutive nights of racing at Tucson Speedway concluded Saturday  with the 5th annual Chilly Willy Super Late Model event.  Brandon Carlson, making his official Chilly Willy debut finished 14th, while Darrell Midgley drove the back-up car to a 18th place finish.  Leading up to Saturday nights Chilly Willy 150 were two preliminary 50-lap Features run Thursday and Friday night.  Victoria, British Columbia’s Carlson finished 8th and 9th in his two Features.  Sidney, BC’s Midgley finished 14th Thursday night and then was taken out in a spectacular crash on Friday night.  Midgley was running 6th when several cars spun in front of him.  “I managed to stop but then I got smacked from behind.  Rung my bell good.  He was so far into my car he tore the carburetor off his car.”  The crash forced Midgley and crew to bring out the back-up car and prepare it for Saturday night’s 150-lap Feature.

MIDGLEY FINISHED 18TH SATURDAY NIGHT IN THE BACK-UP CAR

“We had two practice sessions in the back-up car (Saturday).  We did run the car here two years ago.”  Midgley had to start the Chilly Willy 150 at the rear of the 36 car field.  The starting position however was looked on as a challenge for Midgley.  By lap 35 he had already cracked the top 20 in the NPP/Alien Race Cars #81 Dodge.  “Car felt pretty good,” says Midgley, “we were going in the right direction.”  Carlson meanwhile had already gained several positions in the NPP/Alien Chassis #81C Dodge when he got tangled up in a multi-car incident on lap 45 while running 16th.  “It was just one of those racing deals.  I was the pinball bouncing off several cars.  In the end I think this prevented some major damage to the car.  It tore up the bumper and knocked out the setup.” There were several consecutive yellow flags following this incident that allowed Carlson’s crew to complete repairs.  “The guys put the car back together as best as they could.  It was close to what we had at the beginning of the race.”

CARLSON FINISHED 14TH IN HIS CHILLY WILLY DEBUT

At the halfway point (Lap 75) Midgley was running 15th and Carlson was running 25th.  Midgley then began losing track position just past Lap 80.  “I had a right rear tire going down,” sighs Midgley, “it happens to me a lot here for some reason.”  On Lap 92 Midgley was passed by his team mate.  “I was hoping a caution flag would fly so I could pit.”  That caution flag did fly on Lap 159 for a single car incident.  With 8 laps to go a multi-car crash brought out a red flag.  Although Carlson missed the accident, Midgley almost had his second major incident of the weekend.  “I got a little right front damage but still managed to get through.”  With five laps to go Carlson had made it up to 12th and Midgley was running 21st.  Midgley gained three spots in the dying laps to finish 18th while Carlson finished 14th.  Erie, Colorado’s Chris Eggleston drove to victory lane in the Chilly Willy 150.
