RACING INTO THE SUNSET

VICTORIA, BC – The final race weekend at Westshore Motorsports Park (formerly Western Speedway) has arrived.  A record twelve classes will jam the pits Friday and Saturday to compete on the 4/10th’s mile paved oval track.  When the final checkered flag flies late Saturday night, the track will officially close its doors after 68-years of operation.  There will be a lot of reminiscing this weekend for a majority of competitors including Team NPP’s Jason Frost.

“The fact that it’s the last race is probably more important to a lot of people than how they finish.  It would be very cool to win the last race ever but I think the whole weekend is going to be a farewell to the speedway.”  Frost has many fond memories of the track.  “The very first time my dad dragged me out to the speedway was in 1983 or 1984.”  Frosts father was a business partner with Mike French.  “Mike was a local Stock Car track champion,” admits Frost, “he actually won that night.”  Just a few years later Frost got behind the wheel of a race car.  “My first race was an Enduro race (1987).  They started everyone who entered.  Your car number was your registration number.  I was the 65th person to register.  I started 65th.  There were 111 cars registered.  It was two hours or 200-laps whichever came first.”  Despite his rookie status Frost had an incredible racing debut.  “I have no idea how they scored the race but somehow I finished 3rd.  I was hooked it was awesome.”

JASON FROST: 1996 WESTERN SPEEDWAY CHAMPION

From that lone Enduro race, Frost quickly found his way into the Bomber class and a regular competitor at Western Speedway.  “This was my first regular series.”  Frost would move onto stock car and registered several top-10 finishes in points.  Frost would win his only track championship in 1996.  Family and running a business would take him away from the track for almost two decades.  A chance meeting with Western Speedway track promoter Darrell Midgley changed everything.  “Darrell was nice enough to offer his seat when he couldn’t make it to the track one night (in 2017).  I was hooked again.  I’ve been in the same car ever since.”

JASON FROST AND TEAM MATE DARRELL MIDGLEY

Frost currently sits second in The Keg Late Model Series just 46-points behind defending season champion Rory Smith.  “To catch Rory we’d have to hit it out of the park.  If he starts and finishes the race I think he’s got it.  He’s been the most consistent, well finishing racer out there this year.”  Frost holds onto the number two spot by just a single point.  “I’m neck and neck with Kyle Cottam (3rd in points).  If I can keep him behind me in points I’d feel pretty privileged.”  Frost finished 24th at the Canada 200 race just two-weeks ago (September 4th).  He had to pull into the pits with overheating problems while running 5th.  “I haven’t had a chance to even look at the car or fix the car or work on the car since the last race.”  Frosts wife has been in the hospital for more than a week.  Unknown to Frost, fellow competitor Brandon Carlson got access to the race shop and spent several hours working on the Team NPP #81F Dodge. “Got a text from Brandon this week saying it’s all fixed.  Don’t even know what he fixed he just told me it’s fixed.”  Part-time Team NPP driver Brandon Carlson won the Keg Late Model Series in 2019.  He enters the race weekend 13th in the points chase.  At this point in time Darrell Midgley hasn’t decided whether or not he’ll be on the track this weekend.  “I think this race has to have him in it,” exclaims Frost, “but if he’s up top watching everyone else racing that might be what he wants to do.  I just want it to be a great weekend for him.”
