STONY PLAIN, AB – The Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series was part of the 18th annual AWANA Grand Prix on the weekend. For the ninth consecutive year, NPP Series announcer Gord Craig called the action at the East Parkland Bible Church in Stony Plain, Alberta. The AWANA Grand Prix features wooden race cars of various design themes competing on a ramp style race track. There were 42 registered teams for this year’s race.
Three years ago AWANA officials added computerized scoring which featured elapsed time and scale speeds for all competitors. This year’s race was one of the fastest yet with cars covering the 30 foot track in about 3 seconds with scale speeds approaching 300kph. The top four cars from each class advanced from heat races to the final round. After being runner-up in 2014 and 1015, Stony Plain, Alberta’s Amy Klassen took top spot in the Sparks Class (age 5 – 9). Spruce Grove, Alberta’s Andrew Hildebrandt was the champion in the T & T Class (age 9 – 13). Carvel, Alberta’s Joshua Jegodtka was the big winner in the Leaders Class. AWANA is a non-denominational, Christian youth organization held in more than 30,000 churches around the world.
The countdown to the 2016 season of the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series continues. Edmonton, Alberta’s Castrol Raceway hosts the season opener on Saturday May 28th.
