CANADA DAY FIREWORKS AT CASTROL RACEWAY

EDMONTON, AB – Incredible racing along with heated exchanges and fireworks on the racetrack and in the pits pretty well sums up night number one of the 13th Annual Oilmens Invitational at Castrol Raceway.  When the checkered flag flew at the end of a grueling 50 lap Feature race, Edson Alberta’s Dwight Kennedy grabbed his second consecutive Feature event victory of the 2006 NPP Late Model series season.  It was Kennedy’s first back to back feature event wins in over 3 seasons.  “This win hopefully put me near the top in points,” says Kennedy, “um….are you sure its been 3 seasons?”  The stage was set for Kennedys jump in the standings after current point leader Trevor Emond was black flagged with 4 laps to go.  Emond was forced to park his race car after spinning Darrel Midgley who had just passed Emond to regain the lead lost to Emond just 4 laps prior to this incident.  Midgley rubbed Emond’s car hard going low into turn one to grab back the lead.  Emond, not happy with the aggressive pass, tapped the rear bumper of Midgley sending the Sidney BC driver spinning down the back straightaway tapping the wall.  Upon entering the pits, several crew members from Midgleys team approached Emonds car and the ‘talking’ began.  Because of this, Midgley also received the black flag which ended a race that he dominated from the drop of the green.  Midgley had been the leader for all but 5 laps of the Feature to this point.  Gerry Emond ran one of his best races of the season Saturday night by finishing second.  After watching his son (Trevor) and Midgley getting black flagged, the Edmonton, Alberta driver, who was running 3rd, was handed the race lead.  The lead was brief as Kennedy got by Emond on the restart.  Sheldon Ford, who was racing in his first event of the season placed third.  Scary moments for Hardisty Alberta’s Kelvin Bell on lap 24.  His motor let go down the back straightaway then caught fire.  For an agonizing few seconds Bell was trapped in his flaming car as hot oil inside the car also ignited.  Thick smoke billowed skyward as emergency crews rushed to the scene.  “This is my first ever fire, my first ever engine blow up…..not fun!” said a disapointed Kelvin Bell who escaped serious injury,  “my car won’t be back Sunday night but I’ll be here to help Tim (Beausoliel).”  On a positive note, Wade Fleming won his first ever heat race in a NPP Late Model and and placed 9th in the Feature.  The 7-time Castrol Raceway Sprint Car season champion is a special guest driver this weekend.  “I couldn’t figure out corner 1 & 2 tonight in the Feature”, says Fleming who at one point in the race was as high as 7th, “hey, at least I made it.”  Night number 2 of the 13th annual Oilmens Invitational runs Sunday night at Castrol Raceway.
