BROUGHTON WINS / TWO PODIUMS FOR BEAULIEU

SWIFT CURRENT, SASK. – The capacity crowd at Speedy Creek Raceway were on their feet several times Saturday night cheering on all race classes that gathered for Southern Saskatchewan’s largest motorsport event.  For 99% of the race fans in the grand stands it was their first look at the $100,000 Northern Provincial Pipeline Late Model Series.  Mike Tom, Brent Broughton, Dwight Kennedy, Jason Beaulieu, Cody Graber and Dan Stewart navigated the wide straights and corners of the 3/8 mile track to grab heat race victories.  In the Feature event Bruce Broughton held off a late charge from Gerry Emond and Jason Beaulieu to capture his first win of the 2006 season.  “The track was fun, the people have treated us awesome.  I’m glad I got my first win of the season here.”  The MDM Foundations/LJB Auto sponsored driver out of Spruce Grove moved from ninth to fifth in the N.P.P. Series points chase and is now within striking distance of the point leader.” Just two months ago Broughton was hovering near last place in the standings.  “Never say never,” adds last years NPP Series rookie of the year, “you just go as fast as you can and count ’em’ up (points) at the end of the season.”  Gerry Emond has always done well on the road with podium finishes in Okotoks and Rimbey.  Now the Western RV/Hitchworks sponsored driver from Edmonton can add Swift Current to his list.  “We were right there.  The car was working good and should be better Sunday night.  We hope to win it.”  Emond’s second place showing moved him past Darrel Midgley in the point standings up to third.  The story of the night was Campbell River BC’s Jason Beaulieu.  Before the N.P.P. Feature race, Beaulieu raced to victory in his I.M.C.A. Modified.  The Swift Current race fans were hoping Beaulieu could score his second feature event win of the night in his Late Model Stock Car.  “That #61 car was quick tonight.  I don’t think I would have been able to get him.” says Beaulieu who finished third, “I’m a little tired (running both classes) but it was a good night.”  Despite fatigue, Beaulieau did enjoy his two podium finishes Saturday night.  “Its going to be tough, but it’s now a personal challenge to see if I can do it again.”  Night #2 of the N.P.P.’s inaugural trip to the Land of Living Skies is Sunday night (August 6th).
