BEST IN THE WEST

VICTORIA, BC – The home track of Team NPP drivers Darrell Midgley, Jason Frost and Brandon Carlson is the proud recipient of a major tourism award.  Western Speedway has been awarded BEST Entertainment destination for 2019 by the Westshore Chamber of Commerce on Vancouver Island.  “It’s quite an honor for sure,” exclaims Midgley, “this is the first time we’ve received this award.  Really proud of the team we have.  They’ve done a great job.”  The track first opened in 1956 and is now the oldest operating race track in Western Canada.  “When Western Speedway was built it was kinda the end of the world out there.  There was nothing.  Now there is a huge world class golf resort nearby and multi-million dollar homes.”  Midgley took over as promoter of Western Speedway in 2007.  His father Reg Midgley ran the track for over 20 years.  “He was there in the 60’s and again in the 80’s.”

Midgley says the award is a tribute to not only his staff and volunteers but to the racers as well.  “We are coming off our best year attendance wise.  You get a great night of entertainment (at Western Speedway).  Our events end at a good time.  It’s no one thing.  All the pieces have come together.”  Ironically when the award was being announced, both Midgley and Carlson were down in Tucson, Arizona.  Track manager Daryl Crocker, who is also Midgley’s son-in-law, was also down in Arizona helping out on the race crew.  “The community is the one judging you for this award,” adds Midgley, “it doesn’t mean we can relax. We will still keep our foot on the pedal.”
