WHITECOURT DRIVER CLINCHES 07 ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
EDMONTON, AB – Saturday night’s freak hailstorm at Castrol Raceway, which handed the 2007 Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series championship to British Columbia’s Jason Beaulieu, also sealed the deal for driver Paul Grundberg. The Whitecourt, Alberta driver clinched the 2007 NPP Rookie of the Year title.
“We’ve had a pretty good year,” says Grundberg who has not finished out of the top 10 in a Feature race all season, “I sure would like to win one before the year is out. Came close with a second a couple of months ago but we’ll have to see what happens at the last race of the year. It’s good that they (Feature) are hard to win. Makes you want to keep coming back to the track. I saw Kevin (Clark) win his first earlier this year and it looked like a lot of fun.” Kevin Clark was the NPP Series Rookie of the Year in 2006. “I have to drive smart at the last race of the year,” says Grundberg, “I’m sitting fifth right now with Darrel (Midgley) and Kevin (Clark) in front of me. It would be nice to get by them.” A finish of fourth or better for Grundberg would make him one the highest finishing rookies in the NPP standings since Gerry Emond (now retired) won NPP Rookie of the Year honors in 2004 by finishing an amazing second in standings.
