WARMING UP IN TUCSON

TUCSON, AZ (January 17) – As temperatures plunge and the snow accumulates, many Canadian and American race teams (plus race fans) look to the southern US states for scheduled motorsports race events this time of the year.  More than 30 Super Late Model teams have registered for the 11th annual Chilly Willy 150 at Tucson Speedway.  This three-day event runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday, January 19th, 20th and 21st.  Over $50,000 in prize money will be paid out including $15,000 to Sunday’s big winner.  Team NPP’s Darrell Midgley and Brandon Carlson will once again be flying the Canadian flag in the Arizona desert.  Midgley made his Tucson Speedway debut at the 2015 Chilly Willy (finished 15th).  His best finish in the Northern Provincial Pipelines #81 Dodge was 10th at the 2017 Chilly Willy race.  Last year, Midgley finished 21st.  At the 2019 race he was involved in a multi-car wreck on a lap-14 crash and finished 37th.  Midgley is hoping to kick off 2024 on a strong note.  “We’re really struggling right now,” admits the Sidney, British Columbia driver, “to be honest its been tough.”  The first test of the brand new year takes place on Friday.  “We are going to try to turn things around in the 50-lap Feature and build some momentum for the weekend.”

Brandon Carlson meanwhile finished 19th at last year’s Chilly Willy race.  The Victoria, British Columbia drivers best Chilly Willy finish was 9th in 2022.  Both Midgley and Carlson won’t be the only Canadians in the field.  Dave Smith from Sidney, British Columbia and Kyle Reid from Fort McMurray, Alberta will be competing this weekend.  This is Reid’s first Chilly Willy 150 appearance at Tucson Speedway.

Dwight Kennedy, owner of Northern Provincial Pipelines Ltd. in Edson, Alberta, is adding $2,000 in additional prize money for drivers.  The race leader at Lap 25, 50, 75, 100 and 125 will receive a bonus $400.00 payout.
