THE CHASE ENDS HERE
RIMBEY, AB. – The current point leader of the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series is approaching the final race weekend of the 2016 season with caution. Darrell Midgley, the defending NPP Series Champion, has a small 27 point lead in the 2016 Championship points chase. With just two races left on the schedule, the driver of the Intergra Tire (Edson) #14 Dodge says anything can happen. “It’s up for grabs for sure. We just need to stay the course and do what we’ve been doing.”
The Sidney, British Columbia driver has won four of the last eight Feature events at Central Alberta Raceways dating back to the 2014 season. He’s hoping that this daytime race event, on Saturday and Sunday, won’t affect his current momentum. “A lot of how the weekend will play out will be track conditions. If the track is raceable, we should be good.” Midgley is looking to become just the third driver in NPP Late Model Series history to win back to back season championships. “I don’t come out from BC to just drive around. I come to win races and that’s what I’m planning to do.” Midgley is one of four drivers that can still mathematically win the 2016 NPP Late Model Season Championship this weekend. Calgary, Alberta’s Mark Miller sits third in points and Stony Plain, Alberta’s Bruce Broughton is fourth. Both Miller and Broughton have already won a NPP Series Championship. Shawn Kennedy enters the final race weekend of the season second in the point standings. The Edson, Alberta competitor has never won a NPP Late Model Series Championship.
“I didn’t have all my ducks in a row right at the beginning of the year,” says the driver of the TheRebel.Media #81 Dodge, “the one thing that’s hurt me in the standings was missing a heat race at the season opener.” Kennedy adds that a win Saturday night would boost his confidence going into championship Sunday. “I know my car is there. I just have to work on my consistency. Going to give Darrell a run for his money this weekend.” Kennedy leads third place Mark Miller by just five points. Miller briefly held the points lead after winning the season opener back in June.
Miller meanwhile leads fourth place Bruce Broughton by only three points. Broughton has gone to victory lane twice at Central Alberta Raceways with his most recent victory coming September 11th, 2015. This is the third consecutive season the Rimbey, Alberta track is hosting the final race of the season for the NPP Late Model Series.
