RACING BILLBOARD
EDSON, AB – With hundreds of pace laps and thousands of kilometers of highway travel, the official pace car of the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series continues to turn heads. “It’s something you don’t see every day,” exclaims NPP Series announcer Gord Craig, “it’s our 370 horsepower racing billboard.” The NPP Late Model Series has been using an official pace car since the 2008 season. The current pace car is a 2014 Dodge Charger. “There will probably be over 80,000 kilometers on our current pace car by December 31st.”
With race cars currently parked for the long off-season, the pace car becomes a valuable tool. “Racing and motorsports is furthest from people’s’ minds between November and March. For a brief instance that changes when they see it driving down the highway or street. The car may have NPP on the side but in the grand scheme of things it really is an advertisement for local racing.” The track logos of Castrol Raceway, Central Alberta Raceways and many other facilities have all appeared on the pace car. The pace car has been seen at 14 different tracks over the years. “Obviously its main task is to lead NPP Late Model drivers to the green flag but our pace car has been used for Sprint Cars, Modifieds, and even ice race cars. From time to time we do get requests for its use.” The most recent venture for the NPP Series pace car was leading a field of pavement Late Models in Victoria, British Columbia at Western Speedway.
The moving billboard aspect of the NPP Series Pace Car has been in off-season mode since the end of September. “The top three drivers and rookie of the year will be on display on the back window several times this winter.” On the car right now is a special back window decal promoting a significant race date at Phoenix International Raceway. “It’s not very often you see Canadian sponsors on an American car at an American track.” Canada’s DJ Kennington makes his NASCAR Sprint Cup debut behind the wheel of the Northern Provincial Pipelines/Clark Construction #55 Chevrolet on Sunday, November 13th. “These two Alberta companies should be pretty proud of this.” The moving billboard of the NPP Late Model Series will do its part to let people know.
