PROMO THE PEOPLE
EDMONTON, AB – Castrol Raceway hosted one of Canada’s biggest drag race events on the weekend. Track officials have already declared the 12th annual IHRA Mopar Rocky Mountain Nationals a huge success. Thousands of race fans poured through the gates for the three-day motorsports extravaganza. On display in the concourse area was the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series official pace car.
The portable motorsport ‘billboard’, as its sometimes called, was advertising Western Canada’s toughest racing Series on the dirt and its upcoming race dates for the month of July. Three race dates are scheduled in July making it the busiest month of the 2014 season for NPP Series teams. NPP drivers and crew continue to prepare for the Gold Cup race on Friday and Saturday, July 18th and 19th. The Gold Cup, first run in Edmonton back in 1954, celebrates its 60th anniversary at Edmonton’s Castrol Raceway this year. The NPP Late Model has been the support class at the Gold Cup open wheel sprint car event since 1999.
To wrap up the month of July, NPP Late Model Series competitors will be taking to the oval track on a Wednesday night for the second year in a row. The second annual Race of Champions/Legends of NASCAR event takes place on July 30th. NASCAR drivers Kenny Wallace, Ken Schrader and two-time Daytona 500 Champion Michael Waltrip will challenge the stars of the NPP Series in a full night of racing. Schrader swept last year’s event in Edmonton winning his Qualifying Heat, the ‘A’ Dash and the Feature.
The Concord, North Carolina driver is the first American driver to win a NPP Series Heat and Feature race. Castrol Raceway’s official website has in-depth coverage of both the upcoming Gold Cup and the Race of Champions/Legends of NASCAR events.
