PACING THE FIELD
EDMONTON, AB (August 29) – The official pace car of Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series was called into duty at Castrol Raceway’s premier oval event of the season. The 2014 Oil City Cup, featuring the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, took place in Edmonton. “It was nice that we could help out,” says NPP Series announcer Gord Craig, “I found out [at the track] that there was no dedicated pace car for the race weekend so I offered up the use of our car.” The NPP Late Model Series is the only Alberta racing series to have a full-time pace car. Craig handed over the keys of the 2014 Dodge Charger to some very relieved World of Outlaws officials.
“They [World of Outlaws] were going to use a little rental car for the entire weekend,” admits Craig, “I’m sure glad that they didn’t have to.” This was the 8th consecutive year that the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series has come to Edmonton. The NPP Late Model Series was the support class to the World of Outlaws for three years (2007 – 2009). The Northern Thunder Late Model class became the support class to the World of Outlaws back in 2010.
Talks are underway for the NPP Late Model Series to potentially return as the support class to the World of Outlaws for the 2015 season. The NPP Late Model Series congratulates Donny Schatz from Fargo, North Dakota, this year’s Oil City Cup Champion. The NPP Late Model Series also congratulates Fort Saskatchewan’s Terry Carter and Edmonton’s Dave Smith, the Feature winners in the Northern Thunder Late Model class on Friday and Saturday night.
