OUTLAWS OUT

EDMONTON, AB – One of the most popular shows on the oval track at Castrol Raceway since 2007 won’t be on the schedule in 2016. Castrol Raceway officials have announced that the Oil City Cup, featuring the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, will not be returning to Edmonton next August. The state of the Alberta economy and the current exchange rate are getting much of the blame for this decision. 2016 would have been the tenth consecutive season that some of the best Sprint Car drivers in the world have competed in Edmonton. The Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series was the support class to the World of Outlaw’s the first three years (2007 – 2009) of their visit to Edmonton, Alberta. The Northern Thunder Dirt Late Models have been the support class the past six seasons.

The cancellation of the World of Outlaws appearance next season has put a huge hole in the scheduling plans for Castrol Raceway officials. To bolster the 2016 schedule, additional motorsport events, that don’t feature Sprint Cars or Late Models, are being considered for the Oval venue. Track officials have hinted that the 2016 Gold Cup sprint car race will most likely be moved from July to the last weekend of August in place of the Oil City Cup event. Planning for the 2016 season continues for the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series. NPP Series officials are awaiting the release of available oval dates from several tracks including Castrol Raceway (Edmonton) and Central Alberta Raceways (Rimbey). A tentative 2016 schedule will be release soon.
