NPP GOES INDOORS
STONY PLAIN, AB – The 11th annual AWANA Grand Prix took place at the East Parkland Bible Church on the weekend in Stony Plain, Alberta. For the second year in a row the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series was part of the action. NPP Series announcer Gord Craig provided the play by play for the indoor race event. “This is a real fun event to announce,” says Craig, “to the participants, this is like there very own Daytona 500.” There were 38 registered entrants for the Saturday afternoon Grand Prix race.
Just over 100 people were in attendance to watch the hand made wooden race cars compete on the ramp style track. “There were some close calls and several photo finishes”, adds Craig, “and just like at the big track during the summer, there were several crashes.” Each car competed in four heat races. The top four cars (3 classes) from the heats then transferred to the Features. “The finals were pretty intense,” says Craig, “the room sure got quiet just before the cars were let loose down the track.” Brooklyn Carpenter, Talita Buchner and Edith Fehr were the big winners on the day taking home the trophies.
There were more winners as NPP Late Model Series sponsor Lucas Oil provided some race cars, T-shirts and hats as door prizes. Castrol Raceway, the home track for the NPP Series, also provided family passes to the May 2nd season opener.
