NPP AND NASCAR
EDMONTON, AB – For the second year in a row the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series welcomes some NASCAR star power to its line-up. Castrol Raceway is the stage for the second annual Race of Champions/Legends of NASCAR event on Wednesday, July 30th. Ken Schrader, Kenny Wallace and two-time Daytona 500 Champion Michael Waltrip compete in Western Canada’s toughest racing series ‘on the dirt’. Schrader won the inaugural ROC/Legends event in 2013. “I really enjoyed my time [in Edmonton] last year. Being around Mikey Waltrip…… that was fun too. Looking forward to coming back and meeting with all the race fans again.”
Schrader is coming off a fourth place finish at the NASCAR Truck race event at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio last Wednesday night. “I run about 80 – 90 events a year,” says the veteran driver, “I won [in Edmonton] last year but what happened in the past doesn’t make a difference. You go and everything resets.” Schrader became the first American driver to win a NPP Series Feature and will once again pilot the All Weather Windows #52 Dodge on Wednesday night. “I was surprised how hard you can run these cars. I know Kenny [Wallace] is going to have a blast when he comes to Edmonton.”
Kenny Wallace will be a first-time competitor at this year’s Race of Champions/Legends of NASCAR event. Wallace will be behind the wheel of the Jaynart Directional Drilling #36 Dodge. “I love racing in Canada,” says Wallace, “the third race of my entire racing career was in Canada.” Before jumping to NASCAR in 1988, Wallace was the 1986 ASA Rookie of the year and competed at Ontario’s Cayuga Speedway. “I’ve run at Race City Speedway in Calgary back in the 80’s during Stampede Week.” With just over 900 NASCAR starts Wallace finds himself spending more times racing at dirt tracks. “I’m kinda doing this racing thing backwards,” admits the Concord, North Carolina driver, “I started racing dirt just nine years ago. Now I’m racing around 40 dirt shows a year.” Wallace is coming off an emotional victory earlier this month at Tri- City Speedway. Wallace won the third annual Russ Wallace Memorial race on July 18th. This race is named in honor of his father who holds several records at the Granite City, Illinois track. “Really looking forward to coming to Edmonton and having fun putting on a show for everyone.”
Michael Waltrip is the third NASCAR driver that will be a special guest at the Wednesday night show. Waltrip finished ninth at last year’s ROC/Legends event. Waltrip will be driving the Clark Construction/NAPA Auto Parts #55 Toyota.
