KENNEDY LOOKING OVER SHOULDER AS EMOND’S GAIN

EDMONTON, AB. – The $100,000 Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model series visits southern Alberta for the final time this year.  “Our only visit to Rocky Mountain Raceway Park this season turns out to be a pivotal point of the 2006 schedule,” indicates series announcer Gord Craig, “it will be the last time that all race teams have a mathematical chance at being this year’s champion.  After Saturday night, the number of team’s that will have the opportunity at taking top prize money ($15,000) begins to shrink.”  Mention the name Rocky Mountain Raceway Park and you’ll see a huge smile from Gerry and Trevor Emond.  The track, nestled between Okotoks and High River Alberta, has been very kind to this father and son race team.  Last year Emond Sr. won the series inaugural visit in July.  Emond Jr. took top spot at the August event.  “It’s a fun track to run at,” says 3 time NPP Series Champion Trevor Emond, “I’m looking forward to continuing a bit of a streak started last year.”  The Leduc, Alberta driver currently sits third in the NPP standings, his father Gerry is second.  “My dad got by me (points) in Swift Current,” adds Trevor, “he’s been tough to beat lately.”  Gerry Emond placed second in Feature event action Saturday and Sunday night at Speedy Creek Raceway and now is 119 points behind series leader Dwight Kennedy.  Emond has eight top ten finishes in Feature events this season.  “We’ve worked very hard,” says the 2004 NPP rookie of the year, “there’s only six races left and a lot can happen between now and the end of September.”  Edson Alberta’s Dwight Kennedy, who took over the point lead on the Canada Day Long weekend is not ignoring the challengers behind him who are within striking distance.  “I haven’t been in this position (number one in points) for several years.  It’s nice to have a Dodge up at the front for a change instead of those Chevy’s,” smiles Kennedy, “seriously though both Gerry and Trevor are running good, so is Darrel (Midgley).  Bruce (Broughton) has turned it up as well.  It’ll be a battle right to the end.”
