DOWN IN THE VALLEY
DRAYTON VALLEY, AB – Drayton Valley Speedway officials have announced they are postponing the start of their 2018 season. Track president Brandon Murray explains the delay. “It comes down to a refusal of permits. I was asking for a two-year operating permit. I couldn’t even get a permit for this year (2018).” Murray was looking forward to the upcoming season. “We were one of the first tracks in the province to release its 2018 schedule. The plan was to hold mudbog events and oval events on a majority of our race dates this season.” The facility re-opened in 2016 after sitting dormant for close to a decade. “There is a lack of support from the county,” sighs Murray, “we just can’t move forward (without permits)”. The 2018 season opener scheduled for May 26th and 27th, along with the June 9th and 10th race weekend have officially been cancelled. The third race weekend of the year, scheduled for the Canada Day long weekend (June 30th/July 1st), along with the remaining 2018 schedule is currently in a holding pattern pending approval of permits. The NPP Late Model Series is scheduled to compete at Drayton Valley Speedway on the Canada Day long weekend. “Right now things aren’t looking good for racing in the Drayton Valley region,” says NPP Series announcer Gord Craig, “we are watching the situation closely. Hopefully the problems, between the county and the track, can be worked out.”
